Bill approved by RI Assembly imposes tougher rules for scrap metal dealers to curb theft
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Legislation approved by the Rhode Island General Assembly aimed at curbing metal theft is headed for the governor's desk.

The Copper Theft Prevention Act requires scrap metal dealers to get a license from the state attorney general's office before purchasing certain types of metals. It also requires dealers to get identification information from sellers of copper and other metals, sets up new regulations for sales, and creates penalties for dealers who violate the rules.

Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio (ruh-JEER'-ee-oh) has said that if the state wants to crack down on metal theft it has to target not only thieves but dealers who purchase the stolen metals.

If Gov. Lincoln Chafee signs the legislation, it would take effect on Dec. 31.
